How does a gas furnace work?
The Process
A gas furnace heats your home by burning natural gas to create warm air that’s circulated through your ducts. Here’s the basic process:
- Fuel Combustion (A) – Natural gas is ignited in the combustion chamber.
- Heat Exchangers (B & C) – The hot gases move through primary and secondary heat exchangers, safely transferring heat to the air.
- Blower Fan (D) – A blower pushes this warm air through your ducts and into your home.
- Air Intake & Gas Valve (E & F) – Fresh air enters, and the gas valve regulates fuel flow for safe operation.
- Exhaust System (G) – Byproducts from combustion are vented safely outside.
- Condensate Drain (H) – High-efficiency furnaces also remove extra moisture created during the heating process.
The result is steady, reliable, and energy-efficient heat that keeps your home warm all winter.
